Tennis on the Racetrack continues to reveal its stars. The Invitational Tournament that will be played in May 2023 at the Enzo and Dino Ferrari International Racetrack of Imola has already had confirmation of Matteo Berrettini’s participation – now number 6 in the world, finalist at Wimbledon in 2021 and Italy’s top player. The second protagonist announced by the CC LAB organisers is another Italian: Lorenzo Sonego, 26 years old from Turin, and number 21 in the ATP world rankings.

Sonego is one of the great players of the Italian tennis renaissance. He grew up in Piedmont and started playing at 10 years old, under the guidance of the celebrated coach, Gipo Arbino. Although he arrived on the International tennis scene later than his peers, he has stormed his way up the ratings. He has already won two major titles – in 2019 on the grass of Antalya (Turkey) and in 2021 on the clay of Cagliari. In addition, he is a permanent presence in the Davis Cup National Team and has also achieved important results in Grand Slam tournaments, most notably at Roland Garros in 2020 and at Wimbledon in 2021.

On an individual level, however, the most memorable moment of his career to date must be at the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna, in the autumn of 2020, when Lorenzo dominated world number 1, Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals, inflicting one of the worst defeats of the Serbian’s career, beating him 6-2 6-1. Sonego then went all the way to the final, losing only to the Russian Andrey Rublev. It is clear that how the Piedmontese is perfectly at ease on every surface, from the slow to the fast – the perfect player for the innovative formula of Tennis on the Racetrack.

But he is also beloved by the public, (and not only the Italians), particularly for his humble attitude, while at the same time being a great fighter. Over the last few years, his progress has been constant and has made him appreciated everywhere.
